Despite yet another change, these last three albums with Joe Lynn Turner dont sound much different. Checking in with some solid, straight ahead rockers like the whirling showpiece Fire Dance, Drinking With the Devil, and powerhouse closer Make Your Move, the most notables are in fact the Euro-Foreigner stylings of Stranded, Cant Let You Go, which sounds like this albums I Surrender, and finely polished Street of Dreams. As a result, Bent Out of Shape might feel like the tamest Rainbow entry, but its a deftly executed one that maintains a cool distant vibe through the albums ten tracks, as the band continues to conjure images of isolated castles late into the game, only now featuring a row of Porches parked outside. Next stop for Blackmore and Glover would be the actually very Rainbowish Deep Purple MKII reunion album, Perfect Strangers. Published. Strangely that meant that this album featured more purple style Blackmore and possibly even some better solos than on the previous album but it also meant that the overall songs werent so good. Now of course in retrospect Bent Out of Shape sounds very like the Deep Purple album Slaves and Masters. In fact it is classic Blackmore, getting bored of everything after three or four albums and wanting to change. It is clear that he is tiring of the overly commercial sound here and only two or three tracks are in the Stone Cold mould. Street of Dreams which Blackmore later claimed was the most commercial song he ever wrote and couldnt understand why it wasnt a massive hit and to a lesser extent Cant Let You Go despite the purplesque church organ intro. Most of the tracks have no memorable hooks, no little bits of magic and subsequently they dont stick in your head. At times the lyrics are just plain dopey.drinking with the devil and he sticks me with the bill. Drinking With The Devil may be the biggest culprit and it is quite possibly the worst song Rainbow ever recorded although Stranded, Make Your Move and Fire Dance are no better. Blackmore throws in good solos which makes the songs listenable yet ultimately disappointing. Strangely the two instrumentals where you would expect Blackmore to let rip are pretty ordinary. One final plus point though was the addition of female backing vocalists Dee Beale and Lin Robinson even if they were so low in the mix you could almost miss them. On the album which followed, Bent Out of Shape, there is only one track that I might mention in the same category Cant Let You Go. Some tracks are evidently better than others, for example, the instrumental Anybody There is better than the vocal number that it follows (Fire Dance). I wouldnt call anything on this album simply bad, but too much of it is quite mediocre. Luckily, we have the aforementioned Cant Let You Go to remind us that Rainbow used to be one of the best hard rock combos around. Dont agree Just listen the second song Cant Let You Go with a splendid church organ intro. Man, his whiskey-soaked voice gives me goose bumps every time I heard it. All musical aspects are very relevant, it is hard to find any technical flaw. By the way, dont miss the Street of Dreams with stunning vocal work and the famous Snowman with its cosmic, no-earthly guitar sound. As a whole, Bent Out of Shape is one more the greatest page in Rainbows rock book. That would make this line-up Mk XLVII or something like that.
